چکیده
To model a nematic emulsion consisting of a surfactant–coated water droplet dispersed in a nematic host, we performed a molecular dynamics simulation of a droplet immersed in a system of 2048 Gay-Berne ellipsoids in a nematic phase. Strong radial anchoring at the surface of the droplet induced a Saturn ring defect configuration, consistent with theoretical predictions for very small droplets. A surface ring configuration was observed for lower radial anchoring strengths, and a pair of point defects was found near the poles of the droplet for tangential anchoring. We also simulated the falling ball experiment and measured the drag force anisotropy, in the presence of strong radial anchoring as well as zero anchoring strength. 61.30.Jf, 64.70.MD, 61.30.CZ Typeset using REVTEX 1

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals
Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...
متن کاملGlass Formation in the Gay - Berne nematic liquid crystal
We present the results of molecular dynamics simulations of the Gay-Berne model of liquid crystals, supercooled from the nematic phase. We find a glass transition to a metastable phase with nematic order and frozen translational and orientational degrees of freedom. For fast quench rates the local structure is nematic-like, while for slower quench rates smectic order is present as well. 61.30.-...
متن کاملAnomalous glassy relaxation near the isotropic-nematic phase transition.
Dynamical heterogeneity in a system of Gay-Berne ellipsoids near its isotropic-nematic (I-N) transition, and also in an equimolar mixture of Lennard-Jones spheres and Gay-Berne ellipsoids in deeply supercooled regime, is probed by the time evolution of non-Gaussian parameters (NGP). The appearance of a dominant second peak in the rotational NGP near the I-N transition signals the growth of pseu...
متن کاملViscosities of the Gay-Berne nematic liquid crystal.
We present molecular dynamics simulation measurements of the viscosities of the Gay-Berne phenomenological model of liquid crystals in the nematic and isotropic phases. The temperature-dependence of the rotational and shear viscosities, including the nonmonotonic behavior of one shear viscosity, are in good agreement with experimental data. The bulk viscosities are significantly larger than the...
متن کاملDo thermotropic biaxial nematics exist? A Monte Carlo study of biaxial Gay–Berne particles
We have investigated with extensive Monte Carlo simulations in the isothermal isobaric ensemble a system of N = 8192 elongated attractive–repulsive biaxial Gay–Berne (GB) particles. We have found a uniaxial and biaxial nematic and a biaxial orthogonal smectic phase in this thermotropic model system.
